Understanding the Disease of Alcoholism and Learning to Deal with it

Alcoholism Treatment

Most alcoholics cannot fully recover from their addiction without some type of alcoholism treatment. Alcoholism treatment will give the alcoholic the support system they need during the long journey to recovery. Most alcoholism treatment centers also offer support groups for families so they can begin to heal as well.

What Type of Alcoholism Treatment is the Right Choice?

There are many different choices when it comes to treatment for alcoholism. Each alcoholism treatment program will be structured a little differently, but they are all working toward a common goal – to achieve sustained sobriety.

This goal can be achieved with an inpatient program, outpatient program, group therapy, wilderness retreats, or any of the other types of alcoholism treatment options available. For the best success you need to find an alcoholism treatment program that you or your loved one is comfortable with.

The right choice in alcoholism treatment is also the one that the alcoholic will stick to. Unfortunately, alcoholism treatment is not like having surgery to remove an appendix. Once you have you appendix out you feel better and you don’t have any more problems with it. But this is not true with alcoholism or any other addiction. Achieving sobriety is a lifelong process. It has to be worked on constantly. That is why people who have successfully achieved sobriety still attend meetings such as AA 20 years or more after they quit drinking.

*Just a note here – alcoholism treatment will be the most effective if it is the choice of the alcoholic to enter. Many times the alcoholic or addict is forced into treatment by family or friends and they are resistant. However, they go to please those around them. They are not getting sober for themselves, but for others. Often treatment under these conditions fails. The alcoholic will stay sober for a period of time, but they often relapse. In order not to disappoint those who put them into alcoholism treatment, they will start hiding their drinking and often end up in the same state as they were before.

Now I don’t say this to discourage family members from trying to get help. You just need to understand the facts. Alcoholism disease is real. People can die from it unless they get help. But one of the problems with alcoholics and addicts is they are very proud, they think they are invincible, and they are very resistant to help. It is all part of the addict personality.

Rock Bottom and Alcoholism Treatment

You have probably heard that an alcoholic needs to hit rock bottom before they will seek help. This is very true. However, rock bottom can be different things to different people. For some it may be losing everything important to them – home, family, job, etc. and ending up on the streets or moving from relative to friend trying to find a place to stay. For someone else, rock bottom may be a threat to leave from their spouse or an employer putting them on probation for a workplace violation.

It seems that the further a person is in the stages of alcoholism the harder they have to fall to realize that they need help.

No matter what an alcoholic’s rock bottom may be, that is usually what propels them into seeking help and alcoholism treatment.  When a person is ready to seek help it is a good idea to know where to find it. This is where family and friends can step in and provide the help they need.

Family and friends can research alcoholism treatment programs in the area and have a list of names and phone numbers of alcoholism treatment centers handy. When the alcoholic finally admits that they need help, the information is right there and you can act on the desire for help immediately.

If the alcoholic has to wait a day or two to find an alcoholism treatment center, they may talk themselves out of needing treatment. Their inner addict starts to convince them that they really don’t need any help and that they can beat this on their own. So many people have taken the step toward alcoholism treatment and then didn’t follow through because there was a delay between when they expressed a desire and a treatment program was found.

In addition to finding alcoholism treatment programs in the area, check with your health insurance company and see what they will pay toward an addiction recovery program. Many health insurance providers will pay for treatment one time. In addition, many employers will offer help with paying  for treatment. Employers are also usually very good about letting the employee take time off work to enter an alcoholism treatment program.

Alcoholism Treatment and the 12 Steps

Many alcoholism treatment plans use a 12 step program that was first incorporated by Alcoholics Anonymous. A 12 step program can be very powerful in helping someone suffering from alcoholism disease or any addiction for that matter to find sobriety.

With the 12 steps, the alcoholic works each step one by one until they complete all 12. This takes the alcoholic on a journey to recovery that includes acceptance, making amends and helping others. The alcoholic comes full circle with a 12 step program from needing help to giving help.

A 12 step program like Alcoholics Anonymous is a great follow-up to an alcoholism treatment program. The alcoholism treatment program will help jump start the recovery program and help the alcoholic through detox and those tough first weeks. Alcoholics Anonymous will be there to help the alcoholic for the rest of their life giving support when times get tough and allowing them to give back by helping others find sobriety.

Overcoming any addiction is tough, but it is worth it in the end. You will find a life worth living and a have fulfillment once again from the things you love. Alcoholism treatment is the key to living a better life free from addiction.
